New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In Hindu tradition, Holika Dahan is regarded as a sacred ritual symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. However, according to traditional beliefs, witnessing the Holika fire is not considered beneficial for everyone. Religious texts caution that during the Holika Dahan, scheduled this year on March 3, 2026, the surrounding environment is believed to experience an increase in negative energies. It is believed that certain individuals may face physical or mental discomfort if they come too close to the flames, and such people are advised to maintain a safe distance.
According to traditional interpretations, newly married women celebrating their first Holi at their in-laws’ home are advised not to watch the Holika Dahan fire. The flames are symbolically associated with destruction and the end of old energies, which is considered incompatible with the new and auspicious phase of married life. It is believed that exposure to the ritual fire during this period may create disturbances in marital harmony, and therefore newly married couples are often advised to remain indoors.
Pregnant women, newborn babies and small children are also advised to stay away from the Holika fire and smoke. It is believed that the strong heat and changing atmosphere during the ritual may negatively affect delicate health and sensitive minds. Similarly, people who are seriously ill or experiencing mental stress are advised to avoid the site, as the smoke and intense environment may worsen their condition. Such individuals are encouraged to remain in a calm environment at home and engage in prayer or meditation, including devotion to Vishnu, to maintain positive energy.
