New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Hiccups are a common problem that most people experience from time to time. They can occur while eating, laughing, crying, or due to sudden changes in breathing patterns. Experts say hiccups are caused by sudden contractions of the diaphragm, the muscle located below the lungs that plays a key role in breathing.

According to health experts, one of the easiest ways to stop hiccups is by slowly sipping cold water. The cold sensation stimulates nerves in the throat and may help interrupt the reflex responsible for hiccups. Another commonly recommended method is to take a deep breath and hold it for a few seconds, which can help regulate diaphragm activity.

Honey is also believed to provide relief by soothing the throat and calming nerve signals that trigger hiccups. Some people find that keeping a small amount of sugar in the mouth can also help by distracting the nerves involved in the hiccup reflex. However, people with diabetes should consult a doctor before trying the sugar remedy.
