New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In Sanatan Dharma, the holy festival of Mahashivratri is considered a symbol of devotion, restraint, and meditation. In the year 2026, the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month will begin on February 15 at 05:04 pm and will end the next day on February 16 at 05:34 pm. According to the Panchang and astrological calculations, this year the fast of Mahashivratri will be observed on February 15 only. On this special day, Shiva devotees perform special prayers to please Mahadev, but small mistakes made unknowingly can reduce the benefits of the puja. Therefore, it is very important to follow the rules mentioned in the scriptures.

These materials are prohibited on Shivling

In worshipping Mahadev, devotion, as well as the selection of the right materials, is crucial. According to scriptures, one should never offer vermilion or kumkum to the Shivalinga, as Lord Shiva is an ascetic and these items are considered symbols of good fortune or adornment. Similarly, the use of a conch shell is strictly prohibited in Shiva worship, so do not offer water from it. Furthermore, offering Tulsi leaves, a favorite of Lord Vishnu, to the Shivalinga is also considered prohibited. Using the wrong materials can hinder the worship, so it is advisable to avoid these items.

Special rules for the Abhisheka utensils and circumambulation

Special care should be taken while selecting the vessel during Jalabhishek. Using a copper pot is considered the best for pouring water on Shivling, but keep in mind that Abhishek should never be done by pouring milk in a copper vessel. It is in accordance with scriptures to use only steel or silver vessel for offering milk. The flow of water should be very slow and continuous while performing Abhishek. Apart from this, people often make mistakes while circumambulating Shivling. Shivling is never circumambulated completely. The place from where the water of Abhishek comes out, i.e. Jaladhari, should never be crossed. One should always return after doing half circumambulation.

Importance of Satvik food and chanting mantras

Devotees observing the Mahashivratri fast must exercise strict control over their eating habits and behavior. Tamasic foods, such as garlic, onions, or heavy meals, should be completely avoided on this day, and only Satvik fruits should be consumed. Maintaining a calm mind and refraining from anger or abusive language towards anyone is also part of the fast. During worship, chant the mantra "Om Namah Shivaya" correctly, and avoid offering broken rice, or broken rice grains. Furthermore, it is considered appropriate to distribute the offerings made to the Shivalinga among others rather than consuming them yourself.
