New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): With the onset of summer, the body craves cold beverages. You crave everything cold and fresh. Buttermilk is often consumed in summer to maintain body temperature and enhance taste. However, buttermilk is more than just a beverage; it is said to balance digestion and maintain the balance of the three doshas (vata, pitta, and kapha).
In Ayurveda, buttermilk is considered one of the most beneficial and effective. Consuming buttermilk at the right time and in the right proportions acts as a medicine for the body. Consuming buttermilk while considering the body's doshas (doshas) provides natural balance to the stomach, digestive system, and the entire body. If the body's predisposition is Vata, some adjustments are necessary before consuming buttermilk.
People with a Vata tendency should consume a pinch of rock salt with cold buttermilk. This prevents stomach problems and improves digestion. Many people feel the need to defecate immediately after consuming buttermilk. In such cases, consuming it with black salt or rock salt will help maintain the digestive fire in the stomach.
If your body is bile-oriented, consuming buttermilk with sugar candy is ideal. Bile produces heat in the body. Consuming buttermilk and sugar candy helps cool the body. This reduces heartburn and excessive acid production, and promotes better digestion.
If your body tends to be phlegm-prone, you should consume buttermilk with a pinch of dry ginger. This will prevent coughing immediately after drinking buttermilk, and it will also prevent sore throat and nasal congestion. It will also prevent digestive fire from slowing down. Ayurveda clearly states that buttermilk or any other beverage is not equally effective for every body. If consumed correctly, beverages or any other food can become medicine. Therefore, always consume food or beverages only after assessing your body.
