Struggling with insomnia and anxiety? Makarasana may help you relax and sleep better
Makarasana is a relaxing yoga posture that may help ease tension, calm the mind and support better sleep when practised regularly.

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Yoga plays an important role in maintaining physical and mental well-being amid today's hectic lifestyle. Among various yoga postures, Makarasana, or Crocodile Pose is known for its relaxing effects. It may help ease stress, fatigue and back discomfort while promoting overall relaxation.
The word Makarasana comes from the Sanskrit words 'makara', meaning crocodile, and 'asana', meaning posture. According to the Ministry of AYUSH, this posture helps relax muscles and may provide relief from stiffness in the back, waist and shoulders. It is also considered beneficial for breathing and overall physical and mental balance. The posture supports spinal relaxation and flexibility making it useful for people experiencing muscular tension although those with slipped discs or other spinal conditions should seek professional guidance before practising it.
Makarasana is often called a relaxation pose because it encourages slow, deep breathing and helps calm the body. This may support the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body's rest-and-digest response and help reduce stress. By promoting relaxation, regular practice may improve sleep quality and help manage anxiety. Stress reduction may also support blood pressure management but the pose is not a substitute for medical treatment. People with serious injuries those recovering from recent surgery and pregnant women should avoid practising it unless advised by a qualified healthcare professional.
