World’s only roadless village where boats replace cars and bikes
This rare village has no roads at all, and residents rely entirely on boats for daily travel and work.

Netherlands (The Uttam Hindu): Away from the chaos of big cities, the village of Giethoorn offers a unique and peaceful lifestyle where there are no roads and life moves entirely on water. Known as the “Venice of the North,” this picturesque village replaces traffic noise with the soothing sounds of flowing canals and birds, giving residents a calm and refreshing environment.
In this village, there are no cars or roads connecting homes. People travel by small electric boats or walk across more than 170 wooden bridges built over canals. From daily commuting to transporting goods, everything is done through waterways, making it one of the most unusual yet beautiful settlements in the world.
The boats used here are called whisper boats, which run on electric motors and produce almost no noise or pollution. The absence of traffic and smoke keeps the air clean and the surroundings peaceful. Even in extreme weather, residents enjoy a comfortable life amid water and greenery, without relying heavily on modern cooling systems. Most people can reach their workplaces within minutes using their personal boats.
With a population of around 2800, Giethoorn attracts nearly one million tourists every year. Despite its global popularity, locals continue to preserve their traditional way of life and strongly oppose the construction of roads. The village stands as a rare example of slow and sustainable living, far removed from the fast paced lifestyle of modern cities.
