Experts caution against rapid water intake, warn of kidney impact
Experts warn that drinking water too quickly can strain the body and may negatively affect kidney function.

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In a busy lifestyle, feeling tired is common and many people try to overcome it by drinking large amounts of water in one go. Young people often take it as a challenge to finish a full glass or bottle in a single breath. However, health experts warn that this habit can be harmful.
Scientific studies suggest that the body absorbs water gradually. The kidneys filter blood and maintain the balance of essential nutrients through tiny units called nephrons. When a large quantity of water is consumed at once, it puts sudden pressure on the kidneys forcing them to work harder and potentially affecting their function over time.
Experts also caution that excessive water intake at once can disturb the body’s electrolyte balance. A sudden drop in sodium levels may lead to symptoms like dizziness, weakness and vomiting. In extreme cases, this condition can turn serious and is known as water intoxication.
Poor urinary habits such as holding urine for long periods can further increase the risk of infections, which may impact kidney health. Doctors advise drinking water in small amounts at regular intervals while sitting comfortably. This helps the body absorb water efficiently keeps it hydrated and reduces unnecessary strain on the kidneys.
