New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): India’s largest airline IndiGo has announced a significant increase in ticket prices, delivering a shock to air travelers. The airline has raised fares for both domestic and international flights due to the sharp rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices. IndiGo has introduced an additional “fuel charge” ranging from ₹425 to ₹2300 for passengers. The revised ticket prices came into effect from March 14, 2026.

Fuel charge applicable on new bookings from today

According to the airline, the steep rise in fuel prices is linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. A report from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Jet Fuel Monitor indicates that fuel prices in the region have surged by more than 85 percent. Aviation turbine fuel accounts for the largest share of operating costs for airlines.

IndiGo stated that adjusting fares became necessary due to the heavy cost pressure. However, the airline said it has tried to keep the increase relatively limited by introducing it as a “fuel charge.” The new rule applies to all ticket bookings made from 12:01 am on March 14, 2026.

Different charges for different routes

With the new pricing structure, passengers will pay different fuel charges depending on their travel destination. For domestic flights within India, IndiGo has set a fuel charge of ₹425. The same charge will apply to flights to countries in the Indian subcontinent, including Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

Passengers traveling to Middle Eastern countries will have to pay an additional ₹900. For flights to Southeast Asia, China, Africa and Western Asian countries, the fuel charge has been set at ₹1800.

Travelers flying to European destinations will face the highest increase, with a fuel charge of ₹2300 added to their ticket price.
