Amritsar (The Uttam Hindu): In a shocking incident from Punjab, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sarpanch was shot dead in Amritsar. The deceased has been identified as Jarmal Singh, the sitting sarpanch of Valtoha village in Tarn Taran district. He had come with his family to attend a wedding ceremony when the incident took place.

According to information received, the wedding celebrations were underway when two unidentified youths entered the marriage palace and suddenly started firing. The attackers specifically targeted Jarmal Singh and fired bullets at his head. He was critically injured in the attack and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Panic and chaos broke out at the venue following the shooting.

Police investigation underway

After receiving information about the firing, police reached the spot and cordoned off the entire marriage palace. Statements of people present at the wedding are being recorded. Police suspect that the attackers had conducted prior surveillance of the sarpanch. During the investigation, it has come to light that Jarmal Singh had survived three earlier attacks in the past. Police are scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas and efforts are being made to identify and trace the assailants.
