Amritsar Police foils major terror plot: Youth arrested with IED, links to Pakistan smugglers

Amritsar (The Uttam Hindu): Punjab's Amritsar Rural Police has arrested a youth with IED (Improvised Explosive Device) and other suspicious material, who was allegedly in touch with smugglers linked to Pakistan.

Police officials said the arrested accused has been identified as Harman Singh, son of Major Singh, a resident of Umarpura village, Tehsil Ajnala. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused obtained IEDs and other explosive materials in February 2026 on instructions from handlers based in Pakistan. Police suspect he was planning a major terrorist attack.

The operation was carried out jointly by the CIA team from Amritsar Rural and the Ajnala police station. Acting on intelligence, the police acted swiftly and arrested the suspect and recovered a large quantity of explosives from his possession.

According to police, approximately 530 grams of IED material, a PTD switch, a voltage battery, and an unregistered motorcycle were recovered from Harman Singh. These items clearly indicate that the accused was preparing to carry out a major conspiracy.

He said that investigating agencies have also learned that the accused was in constant contact with smugglers and suspicious elements based in Pakistan and was acting at their behest. This case may be linked to an international network, and the investigation is being further deepened in light of this.

Police have currently registered a case against the accused and are conducting extensive interrogations. They are also intensifying raids and investigations to find other suspects linked to this network.

Police officials say that this timely action averted a major incident. Security agencies are vigilant and taking every possible step to maintain peace in the area. This allowed security agencies to foil a potential major conspiracy in time.
