Amritsar shooting: AAP sarpanch’s son killed, friend wounded over old rivalry
An AAP sarpanch’s son was shot dead in Amritsar and his friend injured in an incident reportedly linked to an old rivalry.

Amritsar (The Uttam Hindu): The son of an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sarpanch was shot dead in Cheeta Kalan village of Amritsar district, while his friend sustained injuries in the attack. The assailants allegedly fired seven to eight rounds at Tirath Singh and his friend Ranjeet Singh. Both were rushed to a hospital, where Tirath Singh died during treatment. Ranjeet Singh suffered a bullet injury to his leg and is reportedly out of danger. According to the police, an old personal rivalry appears to be behind the incident.
SSP Rural Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said the shooting took place around 7:30 pm. Tirath Singh, a resident of Cheeta Kalan, was with Ranjeet Singh when some villagers allegedly arrived and opened fire on them. Tirath Singh sustained two bullet injuries, while Ranjeet Singh was shot in the leg. Both were taken to the hospital in critical condition, but Tirath Singh could not be saved. The police have not found evidence so far suggesting that the murder was linked to political rivalry or gang warfare.
Tirath Singh’s family is active in local politics. His mother is the sarpanch of Cheeta Kalan, while his brother, Kar Singh, is an AAP-affiliated block committee member. The family has alleged that a dispute over the sale of drugs had led to an argument between the two sides a few days earlier. However, the police said the exact motive would be established after further investigation. The names of Gurjant Singh, Gurdit Singh, Harkirat Singh alias Haki, and Gora, among others, have surfaced in the case, and a named FIR has been registered. CIA and technical teams have been deployed to trace the accused, with raids underway at suspected hideouts. The SSP said the accused would be arrested soon. The incident has created panic in the village, and police are monitoring the situation closely.
