ASI and Home Guard jawan murder accused killed in encounter, two arrested; officers were shot dead inside police post

Gurdaspur (The Uttam Hindu): In a major breakthrough in the murder case of an Assistant Sub-Inspector and a Home Guard jawan, the Punjab Police shot dead one of the accused during an encounter on Wednesday morning in the Purana Shala area. According to police, the deceased accused has been identified as Ranjit Singh. A police team had reached the spot to arrest him, but he allegedly opened fire. In retaliatory action, he was injured. He was later taken to a hospital, where he died during treatment.
It is noteworthy that on February 22, the bodies of ASI Gurnam Singh and Home Guard jawan Ashok Kumar were recovered from a police post in village Adiyan in Gurdaspur district. Both officers had been shot dead inside the police post. The outpost is located a short distance from the India–Pakistan international border. At the time of the incident, only the two personnel were deployed there.
Police earlier arrested Dilawar Singh, a resident of Alinangal, in connection with the case. During interrogation, the names of Ranjit Singh and Inderjit Singh of village Adiyan surfaced, after which police began searching for them.
During the encounter operation, the official vehicle of the SHO of Dorangala police station overturned. However, the police team managed to control the situation and apprehend the accused. The motive behind the killings is still not clear. Senior police officials are expected to share detailed information with the media soon. Investigation into the case is ongoing.
