Patiala (The Uttam Hindu) : The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a disproportionate assets case. Following the court order, Majithia was released from Nabha Jail in Patiala on Tuesday.

Majithia was warmly welcomed by a large number of supporters outside the jail. As he emerged from the prison premises after his release, the workers were seen cheering. Majithia was seen acknowledging the greetings of his supporters while riding in a vehicle. During this, he twirled his moustache, which generated considerable enthusiasm and joy among his supporters.

The Supreme Court bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta passed the order while hearing Majithia's bail plea. Earlier, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had refused to grant him bail, which Majithia had challenged in the apex court .

Reacting to the decision, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and Aam Aadmi Party Punjab media in-charge Baltej Pannu said that strong evidence exists against Majithia. They clarified that granting bail does not mean an accused has been acquitted and that the law will continue to take its course.

Regarding this matter, the Supreme Court stated that Majithia has been in custody for the past seven months. In its December 4th order, the High Court rejected Majithia's bail plea, stating that the possibility of him influencing the investigation cannot be ruled out. The High Court stated that Majithia could then apply for bail. Vigilance arrested Majithia on June 25th.
