BJP’s Saurabh Joshi elected new Mayor of Chandigarh, wins with 18 votes as AAP–Congress alliance falters

Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a decisive victory in the Chandigarh Mayor election, with its candidate Saurabh Joshi emerging as the new Mayor. Joshi secured 18 votes, taking clear advantage of the split within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress alliance.
According to the official results, the AAP candidate received 11 votes, while the Congress candidate managed to secure only seven votes. The fractured opposition worked in BJP’s favor, paving the way for an easy win for Saurabh Joshi.
Interestingly, even before the voting process began, BJP councillors had started congratulating Saurabh Joshi, reflecting the party’s confidence about the outcome. The results confirmed BJP’s numerical strength and effective floor management in the municipal corporation.
With this victory, BJP has further strengthened its position in Chandigarh’s civic administration. The election outcome is being seen as a setback for the opposition, especially AAP and Congress, whose failure to maintain unity proved costly in the mayoral race.
