Jalandhar/Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): The Enforcement Directorate (ED), Jalandhar, has issued a summon to former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, asking him to appear before the agency on 12th February in connection with a old case registered under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). The summon was issued 3-4 days ago.

However, Captain Amarinder Singh will not be appearing before the agency as scheduled. Captain Amrinder is currently admitted to a hospital in Chandigarh and is recovering after undergoing knee replacement surgery. Given his medical condition, he is unlikely to travel for questioning tomorrow.

According to sources, the case in question is an old matter allegedly linked to a trust involving his son, Raninder Singh. The summon has reportedly been issued under FEMA provisions as part of the ongoing inquiry.

The development has generated considerable buzz in Punjab’s political circles, especially as Captain Amarinder Singh is presently a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is in power at the Centre. Political observers say the timing of the summon has added a new dimension to the state’s evolving political landscape.

Notably, after maintaining a relatively low political profile for a considerable period, Captain Amarinder Singh had become politically active again over the past month. He had given a series of media interviews discussing issues such as the prospects of an Akali Dal–BJP alliance and offering candid views on the functioning of the BJP’s top leadership.

At the same time, speculation had been rife in political circles about his possible return to the Congress party ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. While there has been no official confirmation regarding such a move, the rumours had already stirred discussions across party lines.

With the ED summon now coming into focus, political activity and speculation in Punjab have once again intensified, as parties and observers closely watch the next developments in the case.
