ED's 'Captain summoner' transferred to Chennai, Congress whispers Amarinder Singh's comeback

Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Administrative and political activity has intensified in Punjab ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. The transfer of Ravi Tiwari, Joint Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Jalandhar, has become a topic of discussion. Tiwari is the same IRS officer who issued summons to former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and his son Raninder Singh under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). The department has now transferred him from Jalandhar to Chennai with immediate effect.
Baghel's statement stirs Congress, CM contenders upset
Amidst this administrative reshuffle, another major news has created a storm in political circles. Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel made a statement on Thursday that has shaken the party's internal equations. Baghel indicated that if Captain Amarinder Singh wishes to return to the Congress, the high command may consider it. This statement has disturbed the sleep of many senior leaders in the Punjab Congress who are eyeing the Chief Minister's post. Leaders in the leadership queue fear that Captain Amarinder's return could lead to their elimination.
Fed up with factionalism, Congress remembers old 'Captain'
Political analysts believe that Congress's re-orientation to Captain Amarinder Singh is both a compulsion and a strategy. The Punjab Congress is currently experiencing serious factionalism. Despite Rahul Gandhi's repeated warnings, senior state leaders are unwilling to work under each other. Consequently, the high command believes Captain Amarinder Singh is the one person who has previously held the party together. Congress remembers that when the Badal family (Akali Dal) held absolute power in Punjab, it was Captain Amarinder Singh who broke their spell and twice led Congress to power.
Daughter dismissed speculation, said – will remain in BJP
Meanwhile, amid Congress's efforts to woo him, the Captain's family has currently denied any such possibility. Jai Inder Kaur, Captain Amarinder Singh's daughter and president of the Punjab BJP Mahila Morcha, clarified in Ludhiana that her father is not going anywhere. She stated unequivocally that Captain Amarinder Singh is in the BJP and will remain so in the future. However, this spark, sparked just a year before the elections, has sparked discussions about new equations in Punjab politics.
