Heavy Downpour Alert in Punjab: Bhakra Dam Releases Water, Emergency Number Out

Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Due to continuous rain in Punjab and hilly areas, the water level of rivers and streams is increasing rapidly. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for heavy rain. Meanwhile, the Bhakra Dam management has opened two gates of the dam to control the rising water level in the Sutlej river.
According to the officials of Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), the water level in the reservoir had reached close to the danger mark. The gates have been opened for safety. The officials have appealed to the people to remain alert. In fact, the water level of Bhakra Dam was recorded at 1668.57 feet, which is approximately 11 feet below the danger mark of 1680 feet. However, the situation in Sutlej is still normal.
At the same time, after the rain in Jammu and Kashmir, the water level in Ranjit Sagar Dam has reached the danger mark of 527 meters. Due to which additional water has been released, which has increased the risk of floods in Majha region of Punjab. At the same time, the water level of the Ravi river is continuously rising, due to which the Pathankot-Jammu highway is already closed and a high alert has been issued from Pathankot to Amritsar. The Meteorological Department says that there is a possibility of heavy rain in many parts of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh for the next two days. This may further increase the water level of rivers and streams, which can create a flood-like situation in the lower areas.
The Meteorological Department says that in the next 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rains are expected at some places in Amritsar, Bathinda, Faridkot, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Mansa, Patiala, Rupnagar, SBS Nagar, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Tarn Taran.
