Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): In a major setback for former Punjab minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has denied him bail in the disproportionate assets case. He will now have to approach the Supreme Court for relief. The formal order from the High Court is still awaited.

Majithia was arrested on 25 June and has been in jail for five months. Meanwhile, the Mohali court will hear the petition today seeking to declare his brother-in-law, Gajpat Singh Grewal, a proclaimed offender. His lawyer is expected to file a reply in court. Grewal has already been named as an accused in the case.

The Vigilance Department has already filed the chargesheet against Majithia. The charge sheet includes statements from several Akali Dal and BJP leaders. Officials claim that the chargesheet has been filed within the stipulated time. According to the Vigilance, records from 400 bank accounts were examined over a period of ten years, and 200 witnesses have been listed in the case.
