Mann government becomes support for the elderly: ₹2,400 crore released so far under old age pension scheme

Chandigarh(The Uttam Hindu): Punjab Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur announced that the Punjab government has released ₹2,400.70 crore under the Old Age Pension Scheme in the current financial year. More than 2.3 million beneficiaries are receiving regular pension benefits. The government has allocated ₹4,100 crore for this scheme to ensure timely assistance for every senior citizen.

Dr. Baljit Kaur said that the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, considers senior citizens the pride of the state. Ensuring their dignity, safety and well-being is a top priority. She stated that the Old Age Pension Scheme is not just financial support, but a reflection of the government’s respect and responsibility toward the elderly.

She directed department officials to ensure that pension payments are released on time, stressing that any negligence will not be tolerated. She said it must be ensured that the benefits of the scheme reach every eligible person without delay.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann described the initiative, Sade Buzurg Sada Maan (Our Elders, Our Honour), as more than just a government scheme. He said it represents a gesture of respect and affection towards senior citizens, and an effort to return the honour and care they deserve. Launched on International Senior Citizens Day on October 3, 2023, the initiative continues to benefit elderly citizens across the state.

The Punjab government has also set up a toll-free helpline, 14567, through the Social Security, Women and Child Development Department. This helpline addresses issues related to senior citizens and aims to ensure their welfare and create a supportive environment for them.
