Price Cap Should be Set for Medicines with Similar Chemical Composition: Meet Hayer

Chandigarh/New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu): Aam Aadmi Party Lok Sabha member from Sangrur, Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, raised the issue of high prices of medicines during Zero Hour in Parliament and demanded from the Central Government that a maximum limit should be set on the prices of medicines with similar chemical composition.
Raising an important issue related to health during Zero Hour, Meet Hayer said that under the Drug Price Control Order (DPCO), 2013, prices of some essential medicines have been controlled, but price control is not applicable on the medicines which are used the most, such as medicines given for diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes.
He said that medicines with similar chemical components are manufactured by many companies for the treatment of these diseases, but their prices are different. This is the reason that the same medicine is made for Rs 3, but some companies are selling it for Rs 10 and some for Rs 50.
Meet Hayer said that this is a common problem of the whole country, where due to the high prices of medicines, profits ranging from Rs 300 to Rs 1000 are being made. He appealed to the government to fix the maximum price of at least medicines with similar chemical structure, so that the general public can get relief.
