Jalandhar (The Uttam Hindu): A minor girl living at Gandhi Vanita Ashram in Jalandhar died on Monday during treatment, triggering fresh concerns over the safety and health conditions at the shelter home. The girl was rushed to the Civil Hospital Jalandhar after she complained of severe breathing difficulty.

According to hospital sources, the minor was admitted in the morning, but her condition deteriorated during treatment and she later succumbed. Doctors said the exact cause of death will be confirmed after post-mortem and medical reports.

This incident has raised serious questions as it is the second death at the ashram within the last two months. Earlier also, a minor resident had died under similar circumstances, prompting demands for a thorough inquiry into the functioning of the shelter home.

Officials said that information has been sent to the concerned departments, and police have initiated proceedings as per protocol. Statements of ashram staff and medical personnel are being recorded to ascertain whether there was any negligence in care or delay in treatment.

Authorities have assured that a detailed investigation will be conducted and responsibility will be fixed if lapses are found. Meanwhile, child rights activists have demanded stricter monitoring of orphanages and shelter homes to prevent such incidents in the future.
