Jalandhar (The Uttam Hindu): Welcoming the announcement by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Hockey Punjab President and AAP leader Nitin Kohli said that hosting the Asian Hockey Championship 2026 in Punjab is a historic step, with Jalandhar set to host such a prestigious international tournament for the first time.
He described the decision as a visionary move taken in public interest rather than an election promise, reflecting the government’s focus on delivering concrete results. According to him, the event will promote sports culture, engage youth in positive activities, and help curb social issues like drug abuse.
Kohli informed that matches will be held at the Burlton Park Sports Complex in Jalandhar, while Mohali will host the opening and closing ceremonies. Preparations are underway at a fast pace, with stadiums being upgraded to meet international standards and key infrastructure nearing completion.
He added that the tournament will not only strengthen Punjab’s sporting identity but also boost Jalandhar’s sports goods industry, along with local trade, tourism, and employment. The event will also give young players an opportunity to witness top international teams and gain inspiration.
The championship, likely to be held between October and November, will feature the top six teams from the Asian Games. Kohli expressed confidence that this initiative will establish Jalandhar as a major hockey hub and further enhance Punjab’s reputation on the global sports map.
