Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Independent MP from Khadoor Sahib, Amritpal Singh, who is currently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail in Assam, has been denied permission to attend the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament. The Punjab government has rejected his parole plea, which means he will not be able to participate in the session scheduled from 1 December to 19 December.

Amritpal Singh had recently applied for parole, but the government dismissed the request. The decision was taken by the Additional Chief Secretary of the Punjab Home Department. Earlier, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed the Home Secretary and the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar to take a decision within one week. The Punjab government stated that granting temporary parole to Amritpal could impact the state’s law and order situation. The MP had filed his plea on 21 November, requesting parole for the duration of the Winter Session.

Amritpal Singh, a Khalistani separatist leader, was arrested in 2023. He and his supporters had attacked the Ajnala Police Station in Punjab, after which he went absconding. Following several days of search operations, he was arrested and sent to Dibrugarh Jail in Assam. Later, in 2024, he contested the Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate and won from the Khadoor Sahib constituency.
