Punjab AAP MLA Pathanmajra Escapes Police Custody, Opens Fire While Being Taken to Station, Cop Run Over
Patiala (The Uttam Hindu): In a dramatic turn of events, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Harmit Singh Pathanmajra, representing Punjab’s Sanour constituency, escaped from police custody on Tuesday. The incident occurred while he was being brought from Haryana’s Karnal to Patiala following his arrest.
According to police officials, Pathanmajra and his associates opened fire at the escorting police team and even attempted to run over the officers with their vehicle. One policeman was injured during the attack. The MLA and his aides then fled the spot in two cars – a Scorpio and a Fortuner. While police managed to seize the Fortuner, the Scorpio carrying Pathanmajra is still missing. A search operation has been launched across the region.
Before his arrest, the MLA released a video statement claiming that a case under IPC Section 376 (rape) had been registered against him in connection with his former wife. He alleged political conspiracy and accused the Delhi AAP leadership of interfering in Punjab politics to silence his voice.
Pathanmajra has been no stranger to controversies. In 2022, his second wife Gurpreet Kaur accused him of hiding his first marriage and assaulting her. He had also faced backlash after an alleged obscene video went viral. Punjab Police have assured that the absconding legislator and his aides will be nabbed soon. The investigation into the firing and escape is underway.
