Ludhiana (The Uttam Hindu): A severe heatwave swept through several districts of Punjab on Friday, leaving residents distressed due to extreme temperatures. However, weather conditions took a turn in the evening as strong winds began blowing across many parts of the state after 6:30 PM. Light showers were reported in Ludhiana, Nangal and other areas, bringing temporary relief from the scorching heat.

According to Surendra Pal, Director of the Chandigarh Meteorological Department, the southwest monsoon is expected to reach Punjab by June 25. Pre-monsoon showers before that date are likely to bring some respite. Bathinda recorded a maximum temperature of 46°C, which is 6 degrees above normal.

Two More Die Due to Heatwave, Toll Rises to Three

The ongoing heatwave has turned deadly in Punjab, with two more fatalities reported — one each in Moga and Pathankot. Both victims are yet to be identified. With these, the total number of heat-related deaths in the state has reached three.

Heatwave and Gusty Winds to Continue Till June 17

The Meteorological Department has forecast that the heatwave conditions are likely to persist in some districts till June 17, along with gusty winds in several areas. While these winds may provide marginal relief, temperatures are expected to remain high in the coming days. The IMD has also confirmed that the southwest monsoon has regained momentum this week.

Record Power Consumption in Haryana

As temperatures soar across neighboring Haryana, electricity consumption has hit record levels. On June 12, the state’s peak power demand touched 13,926 MW. Due to a shortfall in supply, the power corporation had to impose load cuts of 550 MW, after which the consumption settled at 13,492 MW.
