Floods Claim 3 Lives in Punjab; 8,000 People Rescued

Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu)- The situation in Punjab is getting worse due to floods. Punjab's Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla said that relief and rescue work is going on on a war footing. So far, 3 people have been reported dead, while more than 8 thousand people have been rescued.


Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla said that in the entire state, only 3 deaths have been reported in Pathankot. 8 thousand people have been evacuated, while food and medicines are being delivered to the stranded people. He said that due to continuous rain in the hilly areas, the water of Ravi, Beas, Sutlej and Uj river originating from Jammu and Kashmir has reached parts of Punjab. Due to this, districts like Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Batala, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Tarn Taran and Hoshiyarpur are affected by the floods. Arpit Shukla said that apart from the local administration, Punjab Police is working in collaboration with the Army and NDRF rescue teams. The rescue teams are trying to bring the people trapped in the floods to the relief camps. The police officer said that control rooms have been set up by the Punjab government and continuous monitoring is being done through 112 police teams.


The police officer also said that air rescue is also going on during the floods. Apart from boats, people were evacuated from the floods on Thursday with the help of army helicopters. The helicopter has been provided by the Punjab government. According to the Special DGP, Punjab Police is having daily meetings with BSF, Army and NDRF. Keeping in view the updates coming from the Meteorological Department, continuous monitoring is being done. The Chief Minister and DGP of Punjab are constantly keeping an eye on the situation.
