Punjab Flood Horror: Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Lands in Amritsar, Promises Modi Govt’s Full Support

Amritsar (The Uttam Hindu): Punjab is reeling under one of its worst flood crises in decades, and the central government has stepped in to assess the situation. On Thursday morning, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan arrived in Amritsar on the directions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take stock of the devastation.
Upon his arrival, Chouhan was received at the airport where Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria handed over a detailed report on the flood-hit regions. He informed the media that two central teams had already been deployed in the state to coordinate relief and rescue operations.
Later, a press conference was held at the Amritsar Aviation Club, where Chouhan was joined by Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu, Punjab BJP president Sunil Kumar Jakhar, and BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh. Addressing the press, the Union Agriculture Minister said:
“The entire nation is proud of Punjab. Whenever the country has faced a crisis, Punjab has borne the brunt with courage. Today, in this hour of disaster, the Modi government stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of Punjab.”
Chouhan added that he would personally visit the worst-affected regions, conduct an on-ground assessment, and submit a detailed report to the Prime Minister for immediate relief measures.
Meanwhile, Ajnala MLA and former cabinet minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal met the Union Minister and submitted a memorandum demanding ₹2,000 crore compensation for immediate flood losses in Ajnala. He also pressed for the release of ₹60,000 crore pending dues owed to Punjab by the Centre. Taking to social media, Dhaliwal wrote:
“Punjab urgently needs funds for reconstruction. The Centre must release pending money without delay.” Rescue and relief operations are continuing across flood-hit districts as thousands remain displaced, while the state government and central teams monitor the worsening situation.
