Punjab Health Dept on alert: 7 family members show Rabies symptoms after dog bite incident

Ludhiana (The Uttam Hindu) : A shocking case has emerged from the Jagraon area of Ludhiana district, where seven members of a single family were found to have severe rabies-like symptoms, causing panic within the health department. Following preliminary examinations at the Jagraon Civil Hospital, all the patients were immediately referred to PGI Chandigarh due to their serious condition.
According to information received, a family member was bitten by a dog about a year ago. The anti-rabies vaccine was not administered at the time. After the wound healed, the matter was not taken seriously. Recently, other family members also began displaying symptoms resembling rabies, following which they were brought to the hospital.
The family reportedly lives near Sherpura Chowk in Jagraon. The head of the family works in a factory. He lives with his wife, three children, and his sister-in-law's two children. The sister-in-law's children have also been living in the same house for the past year. The similar symptoms seen in all seven raises concerns about the spread of the infection.
The patients' condition is serious, and the symptoms resemble rabies
Dr. Gurvinder Kaur, SMO of Civil Hospital Jagraon, confirmed the cases and said that all seven patients had symptoms such as excessive salivation, difficulty speaking, and restlessness. Initially, these symptoms pointed to rabies, so they were immediately sent to PGI Chandigarh. She clarified that a final confirmation of rabies would be possible only after the detailed test report arrives.
Health Department's appeal:
Health officials have appealed to the general public that in case of dog or any animal bite, they should immediately get anti-rabies vaccine and should not be careless in any way, because rabies is a fatal disease.
