Punjab & Himachal Hit Hard by Rains: Pathankot Route Diverted Amid Bridge Collapse

Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Rains are wreaking havoc in many states including Punjab and Himachal and due to this rain, life is getting disrupted. In Pathankot, the old closed bridge on Chakki Khad located on Jalandhar-Jammu National Highway has collapsed due to water. The flood gates of Ranjit Sagar Dam have been opened. The railway bridge built on Chakki Dariya, which connects Jammu and Kashmir to the whole country by rail, is now in danger. Both the routes to and from Pathankot have been closed. People are in panic due to the closure of National Highway and Chakki Dariya bridge.
Traffic has been diverted via Narnot Jaimal Singh. The flood gates of Ranjit Sagar Dam have been opened. The process of releasing water from Pong Dam in Hoshiarpur and Nangal Dam in Rupnagar continued on Sunday as well. Heavy rain occurred in Himachal Pradesh throughout the night. After this, schools and colleges in 8 districts Una, Kangra, Chamba, Hamirpur, Solan, Kullu, Bilaspur, Lahaul Spiti and Mandi have been closed today (25 August). The first snowfall of the season occurred last night at Shinkula Pass in Lahaul Spiti.
