Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Punjab Police has achieved another major success in its crackdown against drug trafficking and illegal arms smuggling. The Counter Intelligence Amritsar team has busted an international smuggling module. During the operation, two smugglers were arrested and police recovered 5.5 kilograms of heroin, four pistols and 10 rounds of ammunition from their possession.

Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav shared details of the operation on the social media platform X. He wrote, “In a major breakthrough, Counter Intelligence Amritsar has busted a module involved in smuggling narcotics and illegal weapons/ammunition. Two accused have been arrested and 5.5 kg heroin along with four pistols and 10 rounds have been recovered.”

The DGP further stated that preliminary investigation has revealed that the arrested accused were in contact with cross-border smugglers. They had received a consignment of weapons and ammunition for further distribution in Punjab. A case has been registered at SSOC Police Station, Amritsar. Police have intensified the investigation to trace the backward and forward links of the entire network and identify other associates involved in the racket.

Punjab Police is currently following a strict “zero-tolerance” policy against narcotics, illegal weapons and organized crime. DGP Gaurav Yadav made it clear that any kind of smuggling and criminal activity in the state will not be tolerated.

Drug trafficking involving heroin, charas, opium and illegal weapons has remained a major issue in Punjab over the past few years, especially in districts located near the Pakistan border. This operation is being considered significant because it involved not only narcotics but also weapons allegedly meant for supply to terrorists and criminals.
