Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Acting on the directives of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to make Punjab safe and crime-free, the Punjab Police achieved a major breakthrough by foiling a potential terror plot. The Amritsar Rural Police recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition near the India-Pakistan border in Gonhewal village, located along the Ravi River.

The seized weapons include two AK-series assault rifles, eight magazines, one .30 bore pistol, two pistol magazines, 50 live .30 bore cartridges, and 245 live 7.62 mm cartridges.

DGP Punjab Gaurav Yadav, while briefing on Tuesday, said that due to the swift and vigilant action of Punjab Police, a major incident has been averted. He stated that the police had recently received inputs about increased movement of Pakistan-sponsored terrorist groups and cross-border gang networks in the border areas, following which the operation was carried out.

DGP Yadav added that this recovery clearly shows Punjab Police’s strong surveillance over cross-border arms smuggling activities. “Our alertness has played a crucial role in preventing a possible terrorist or criminal act in the state,” he said.

SSP Amritsar (Rural) Maninder Singh informed that acting on a tip-off, police teams conducted a combing operation in the Gonhewal area. During the search, a bag hidden near the Ravi River was found containing sophisticated weapons and ammunition.

He further said that an in-depth investigation is underway to identify the source and destination of the weapons, and more recoveries and arrests are likely in the coming days. A case has been registered under Section 25(8) of the Arms Act and Section 113 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Ramdas Police Station.

Police officials stated that the recovery indicates a possible connection between cross-border smuggling networks and terrorist organizations. Investigation agencies are now working to trace both the backward and forward links of this network to dismantle the entire chain of arms trafficking.
