AAP finalizes candidate for Rajya Sabha seat from Punjab, sealing industrialist Rajinder Gupta's name: Kamal Oswal of Oswal Group was initially the frontrunner for this seat, but at the last moment the party finalized Rajinder Gupta's name. This is being considered part of the Aam Aadmi Party's strategy of trying to strike a political and industrial balance by sending industrial leaders to the Rajya Sabha. Earlier, the party had also sent businessman Sanjeev Arora to the Rajya Sabha.
Rajinder Gupta is one of Punjab's leading industrialists and the founder and chairman of the Trident Group. The group has a turnover of over $1 billion and its products are exported to several countries, including India. Headquartered in Ludhiana, Punjab, Trident Group's major industries include home textiles, paper manufacturing, chemicals, and power.
Rajinder Gupta was born on January 2, 1959. He has long been considered one of Punjab's richest individuals and a prominent figure in the state's industrial sector. A by-election for this Rajya Sabha seat in Punjab has been announced. Voting and counting will take place on October 24.
