Punjab's Pharma woes: 11 medicines, including 3 cough syrups, fail quality test

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): A recent investigation into the quality of medicines across the country has revealed shocking figures. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization has raised serious questions about the quality of medicines across the country. According to this report, a total of 112 drug samples have failed the quality test, including 11 medicines manufactured in Punjab.
According to the report, 52 drugs tested in central government labs and 60 drugs tested in state-level labs failed quality tests. Of these, the highest number (49) were from Himachal Pradesh, 16 from Gujarat, 12 from Uttarakhand, 11 from Punjab, and 6 from Madhya Pradesh. Health Ministry officials stated that notices have been sent to pharmaceutical companies concerned with samples of the 11 failed drugs manufactured in Punjab, seeking their response. The process of removing batches containing these drugs from the market is also underway.
Officials said the central and state governments are jointly increasing surveillance on pharmaceutical manufacturing units to prevent the spread of substandard or counterfeit drugs. Consumers have also been advised to purchase medicines only from certified and authorized sellers.
