Rising cancer cases among women in Punjab, 13,299 deaths in 4 years raise concern
Cancer cases among women in Punjab rise sharply, with 13,299 deaths reported in the last four years.

Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Cases of cancer among women in Punjab are rising rapidly, emerging as a major health concern. Between 2021 and 2025, a total of 13,299 women lost their lives due to different types of cancer. Among these, breast cancer accounted for the highest number of deaths, followed by cervical cancer, while ovarian and uterine cancers also contributed significantly. On average, nearly eight women are dying every day due to the disease.
The number of cancer cases has also been steadily increasing, with figures rising from over 39,000 in 2021 to an estimated 43,000 by 2025. Experts say the biggest reason behind this surge is the lack of timely screening and awareness. In nearly 65 percent of cases, cancer is detected at an advanced stage, making treatment more difficult and reducing survival chances. Social hesitation, fear, and lack of information often prevent women from undergoing early checkups.
Environmental and lifestyle factors are also playing a major role in the growing crisis. Polluted water, industrial waste, and heavy use of chemicals and pesticides are increasing health risks. At the same time, poor lifestyle habits such as lack of physical activity, unhealthy diet, obesity, and stress are contributing to the rise in cases. Experts stress that early detection through regular screening can significantly improve treatment outcomes and save lives.
