Sarpanch's killing sparks tension: Ex-Punjab village head shot dead, husband targeted in rivalry-fueled attack

Mansa (The Uttam Hindu): An incident that took place in broad daylight on Saturday in Punjab's Mansa district has created a sensation in the entire area. A horrific outcome of personal enmity was seen in village Khillan, where a former female Sarpanch was shot dead in public. The blame for the crime has been placed on none other than her neighbors. The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Mahendrajit Kaur. The attackers not only targeted the woman but also made a fatal attack on her husband, but fortunately, the bullets hit the car and he survived.
Attacked from behind while riding a bike
According to reports, the incident occurred when former Sarpanch Mahendrajit Kaur was traveling on a motorcycle with her husband for an errand. Armed assailants approached from behind and opened fire, targeting them. Mahendrajit Kaur died tragically on the spot. The bullet aimed at her husband missed the target and struck the vehicle, narrowly escaping his injuries. This firing in broad daylight created panic among the people nearby.
A family member has been murdered before
According to initial police investigations and local sources, this murder appears to be linked to an old rivalry. It is being reported that there was a long-standing dispute between the victim's family and the accused (neighbors). A member of the former sarpanch's family had previously been murdered, leading to speculation that this incident may be linked to gang warfare or revenge. Although the police have not yet officially confirmed the exact motive for the murder, an old rivalry is believed to be the primary reason.
Police took the body into custody and started searching for the accused
Upon receiving information about the shooting, a Mansa police team immediately arrived at the scene. Police seized the former sarpanch's blood-soaked body and sent it to the hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police collected evidence from the scene and initiated investigations based on statements from family members. Police officials say the accused have been identified and raids are underway to arrest them. The case will be fully disclosed soon.
