Amritsar (The Uttam Hindu): The budget session of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) began on Friday, March 28, at the SGPC office in Amritsar, where a budget of over Rs 1387 crore was presented. However, the session was marred by protests, scuffles, and opposition boycotts as Sikh organizations and workers from Damdami Taksal attempted to reach the SGPC office, only to be stopped by the police. The situation escalated when Nihang Bandhiya workers also arrived, causing the atmosphere to become charged.

A march by Sikh Bandhiyas that began at Golden Gate was halted by the police and SGPC task force near Sri Guru Ramdas Sarai. This prompted a sit-in protest by Damdami Taksal workers outside Sri Guru Ramdas Sarai. In response, a heavy police presence was deployed around the Harimandir Sahib complex to maintain order.

The opposition members have boycotted the SGPC session, and the rebel group, led by over 40 members, plans to bring a proposal against the removal of the Jathedars. Former SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur is set to present this proposal. According to the Sikh Gurudwara Act, at least 15 members' support is needed for the proposal to pass. Despite the ongoing unrest, the SGPC's budget, exceeding Rs 1355 crore, is expected to be passed.

There is uncertainty over the participation of Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh and other Jathedars of Sri Akal Takht, as significant opposition to their appointments has surfaced among the Sikh Sangat and SGPC members. Jathedar Tek Singh Dhanola of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib has not been appointed yet, and other Jathedars like Jathedar Baldev Singh of Takht Sri Patna Sahib and Jathedar Kulwant Singh of Takht Sri Hazur Sahib have frequently been absent from the Ijlas. In this context, Giani Malkit Singh, Head Granthi of Sri Harimandir Sahib and Sri Akal Takht Sahib, might attend the meeting.

Additionally, the SGPC has witnessed the loss of around 31 members, and if the proposal to reinstate the removed Jathedars does not pass, it is expected that the Sikh congregation holding a dharna outside will announce further protests to restore dignity within the Sikh community.
