After the Asia Cup, Pakistan has now been excluded from the Junior Hockey World Cup, confirms the FIH

New Delhi/Lausanne (The Uttam Hindu): The strained relations with India have once again impacted the sporting arena. Months after opting out of the 2025 Asia Cup Hockey in Rajgir, Bihar, Pakistan has now withdrawn from the 2025 Junior Hockey World Cup in India. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) officially confirmed the decision on Friday (October 24). The prestigious tournament, scheduled to be played in Chennai and Madurai from November 28 to December 10, will feature 24 teams.
"We confirm that the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has informed the International Hockey Federation (FIH) that they will not participate in the FIH Men's Junior Hockey World Cup in India," FIH said in a statement to news agency PTI.
Importantly, Pakistan had already qualified for the tournament. Sources say the decision was made in light of the recent tensions between the two countries.
The FIH has clarified that Pakistan's withdrawal will not significantly impact the tournament. A replacement team will be announced shortly, and the tournament will continue with the full 24 teams, ensuring the competition continues without interruption. However, this change will require restructuring the tournament's groupings and match schedule.
The decision comes after India recently formalised its policy of banning bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan but also made it clear that it would participate in multi-nation tournaments despite Pakistan's presence.
Some time ago, Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey stated that the door is open for Pakistan to participate in the Junior Hockey World Cup. He stated, "Even if Pakistan is not in a waiting position, the door will always be open for them to welcome." Tirkey's statement made it clear that India, despite strained relations, wants to host international sporting events with an inclusive spirit.
