New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly directed senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to participate in domestic one-day tournaments if they wish to retain their spots in India’s ODI team. Both players have retired from Test and T20 international formats and are currently focusing solely on ODIs. The board and team management want them to maintain their fitness and form through consistent match practice at the domestic level.

According to media reports, the first step in this direction could be the Vijay Hazare Trophy match scheduled for December 24, positioned between India’s ODI series against South Africa (December 3–9) and the upcoming New Zealand series starting January 11. Rohit Sharma has already informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) of his availability for the tournament, while there is no official confirmation yet on Kohli’s participation.

A senior BCCI official stated that both players have been clearly told that domestic cricket participation is mandatory if they wish to continue representing India. “Since both have retired from two formats, playing domestic cricket is essential to maintain rhythm and fitness,” the official added.

Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar also emphasized the importance of domestic matches for all players, saying, “Whenever players are available, they should play domestic cricket. It’s the best way to stay prepared and competitive, especially during long gaps between international fixtures.”

Rohit Sharma has also hinted that he might participate in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Tournament starting November 26. He is currently practicing at Mumbai’s Sharad Pawar Indoor Academy. Meanwhile, Kohli is in London, and the board expects him to return soon to the domestic circuit. Last season, both players played one Ranji Trophy match each Kohli for Delhi after 12 years and Rohit for Mumbai after 10 years.

Agarkar clarified that neither Kohli nor Rohit is under any form of test or selection trial. “Their contribution to Indian cricket is immense. There’s still time before the next ODI World Cup in 2027. As long as they remain focused on one format and occasionally feature in domestic cricket, we’ll continue evaluating their performances,” he said. Agarkar added that team selection in the coming years will also depend on emerging talents and not just on the senior players.
