New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The group-stage match between India and Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2026 will now be played as scheduled. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had earlier announced a boycott of the match against India. The match is slated to be held on February 15 in Colombo. The decision to boycott was taken on the directions of the Pakistan government, but after prolonged discussions with the International Cricket Council (ICC), Pakistan has withdrawn its earlier stance.

ICC talks lead to reversal of Pakistan’s decision

Recently, ICC representatives Imran Khwaja and Mubashir Usmani visited Lahore, where a meeting was held with senior PCB officials. The meeting was convened by the PCB and was also attended by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Aminul Islam Bulbul. His presence was considered significant, as the dispute was also linked to concerns over Bangladesh’s position in the tournament.

During the discussions, the ICC made it clear to Pakistan that refusing to play the match could invite heavy financial penalties and other strict consequences. Following this, the PCB softened its stand and agreed to participate in the match against India.

Match to be played as per schedule in Colombo

The decision has brought relief and excitement among cricket fans, as an India–Pakistan match is regarded as the biggest and most anticipated fixture in world cricket. The match will now be played on February 15 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, as per the original schedule. With the ICC’s active role and cooperation from all stakeholders, hopes are high that the unity of the tournament will be maintained.

Pakistan government confirms participation

The Pakistan government also confirmed the decision through a social media post. The post stated that, after discussions at various levels and appeals from friendly nations, the government has directed the national cricket team to play against India on February 15, 2026, in the ICC T20 World Cup as per the fixed schedule. The government said the decision was taken to uphold the spirit of cricket and ensure continuity of the global sport.

Along with the ICC, Sri Lanka Cricket, the Emirates Cricket Board, and the Bangladesh Cricket Board had also appealed to Pakistan to play the match. Although Pakistan reportedly placed certain demands before the ICC, none of these demands were accepted. However, the outcome has provided relief to the Bangladesh Cricket Board, which will not face any loss due to the dispute.
