New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) – India has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The Commonwealth Games General Assembly, held in Glasgow, Scotland, approved Ahmedabad as the city's host. India previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

India was competing with Abuja (Nigeria) in the bid for the Commonwealth Games 2030, but Commonwealth Sport decided to keep the African country in consideration for the 2034 edition. Commonwealth Sport President Dr. Donald Rukare said, “This marks the beginning of a new golden era for Commonwealth Sport. Following the 'Games Reset', we are moving forward with great preparation towards Glasgow 2026, where we will welcome 74 Commonwealth teams. After this, our eyes will be on Ahmedabad 2030, which will host a special centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games.”

He said, "India brings scale, youthful energy, ambition, rich culture, immense sporting passion and relevance. I am pleased to report that many countries are interested in hosting the 2034 Games and beyond." Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P.T. Usha said, "We are deeply honoured by the trust shown by Commonwealth Sport. The 2030 Games will not only celebrate 100 years of the Commonwealth movement but also lay the foundation for the next century. These Games will unite athletes, communities and cultures from Commonwealth countries in a spirit of friendship and progress."

Commonwealth Games, describing India as the world's most populous country, said it has a rich sporting history. India performed exceptionally well at the recent Commonwealth Games. Ahmedabad's bid reflects India's commitment and the vast scope of modern sports. Moments after Ahmedabad was announced as the host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games, 20 Garba dancers and 30 Indian drummers entered the General Assembly Hall and mesmerized the delegates with a spectacular cultural performance.

The last time the Commonwealth Games were held in India's capital, New Delhi, sports infrastructure in India has developed rapidly since then.
