Khalid Jamil Makes History: First Indian Coach in 13 Years to Lead National Football Team

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In a landmark decision, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has appointed Khalid Jamil as the new head coach of the Indian men’s football team. This marks a historic moment, as Jamil becomes the first Indian in over 13 years to take on this prestigious role.
Jamil, who gained national recognition after leading Aizawl FC to a fairytale I-League title in 2017, was chosen ahead of two high-profile candidates—former India coach Stephen Constantine and Slovakia’s ex-coach Stefan Tarkovic. The final selection was made by the AIFF Executive Committee, based on a shortlist prepared by its technical panel chaired by football legend IM Vijayan.
The 48-year-old will succeed Spanish coach Manolo Márquez, who stepped down last month following a series of disappointing performances by the national team. The last Indian to manage the national squad was Savio Medeira, who held the position from 2011 to 2012.
Currently managing Jamshedpur FC in the Indian Super League (ISL), Jamil’s first test in his new role will come swiftly. He will lead the team at the upcoming Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) Nations Cup, scheduled to begin on August 29 in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Jamil’s appointment is seen as a strong step towards building a homegrown leadership structure within Indian football and inspiring future generations of domestic coaches.
