Pune (The Uttam Hindu): Maharashtra’s Pune city is set to host India’s first International Cycling Race in January 2026, registered with the International Cycling Union (UCI). The event will see participation from athletes representing 50 countries, Pune’s Collector Jitendra Dudhe announced on Wednesday.

Speaking to the media, Dudhe said, “Our goal is to make Pune a global city, recognized worldwide. To achieve this, we have developed a comprehensive tourism plan, which is already being implemented. Pune should be known across the globe, and this event is part of that vision.”

The Collector added that the cycling race will be broadcast on TV channels, allowing international audiences to learn about Pune. “This exposure is expected to boost tourism and investment in the city. Pune’s name will be recognized globally, enhancing not just its reputation but also its economic growth,” he said.

Dudhe also addressed the land acquisition and ownership issues at Purandar Airport, stating that the project had faced opposition from local landowners for years. “When we began land measurements a month ago, there was some resistance. We held discussions with multiple stakeholders and tried to find a middle ground, ensuring that benefits are prioritized and the project is executed in the most equitable manner,” he explained.

The upcoming international cycling race is part of Pune’s broader strategy to position itself as a global tourism and sporting hub, combining sporting excellence with economic development.
