Shreyas Iyer admitted to ICU after suffering serious spleen injury while taking a catch in Australia; BCCI confirms

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has been hospitalized after suffering a lower left rib injury, BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia has confirmed.
"Shreyas Iyer sustained a lower left rib injury while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25 October 2025. He was taken to hospital for further assessment," a statement issued by the BCCI Secretary said.
"Scans have revealed a laceration to his spleen. Iyer is undergoing treatment and his condition is stable. He is recovering well. The BCCI medical team is monitoring his injury status in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India. The Indian team doctor will be with Shreyas in Sydney and assess his progress," the statement said.
According to media reports, the 31-year-old player was at risk of developing an infection due to internal bleeding. Iyer has been kept under medical observation for 2-7 days. His condition is stable.
ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer was injured during the 34th over of the Australian innings on October 25th. Iyer fell to the ground while attempting to catch Alex Carey off the fourth ball of the over. Although he managed to hold on, and the Australian players had to return to the pavilion, this success proved costly for Team India.
While Alex Carey was returning to the pavilion, Shreyas Iyer was lying on the ground, writhing in pain. He then had to leave the field with the physio.
According to reports, Iyer was experiencing difficulty breathing in the dressing room. He was taken to the hospital. Reports revealed internal bleeding.
India won the final ODI of their tour of Australia by 9 wickets. Team India had lost the first two matches of the series. The visitors were then fighting for honor.
