A Group D match played in Chennai between New Zealand and Canada triggered a major reshuffle in the tournament standings. New Zealand defeated Canada by eight wickets, a result that led to the elimination of three teams in one stroke.
Canada defeat ends Super-8 hopes of three teams
From Group D, South Africa had already secured qualification for the Super-8 stage. Following the convincing win over Canada, New Zealand confirmed their place as the second qualifying team from the group. With South Africa and New Zealand moving ahead, the Super-8 dreams of the remaining three teams in Group D were completely shattered. As a result, Afghanistan, United Arab Emirates, and Canada were knocked out of the tournament.
West Indies and England seal Super-8 spots from Group C
The qualification picture is also clear in Group C. From this group, West Indies and England have successfully advanced to the Super-8 stage. Their progression ended the World Cup journey of the other three Group C teams—Scotland, Italy, and Nepal—who failed to cross the group stage hurdle.
India and Sri Lanka also book Super-8 berths
In Groups A and B, the situation appears similar for now. Only one team from each group has officially qualified for the Super-8 stage. From Group A, India progressed unbeaten, securing qualification in style. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka clinched the Super-8 ticket from Group B. However, recent upsets in both groups have made the race for the second qualifying spot more intense, keeping fans and experts waiting for clarity.
