New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Worrying news has emerged for Team India in the 2026 T20 World Cup. Star opener Abhishek Sharma has been hospitalized with a stomach infection. Consequently, his chances of playing in the February 12th match against Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi appear slim.
Reports of Abhishek's ill health surfaced during the first match against the United States on February 7. It was reported that he played the match despite a high fever, after which his condition worsened.
Abhishek was dismissed for a golden duck in the match against the USA. He wasn't even seen in the Indian team's dugout after batting. Sanju Samson fielded in his place. Jasprit Bumrah was also unwell, while Washington Sundar was not with the team. Due to a shortage of players, Kuldeep Yadav and fielding coach T. Dilip handled the drinks service. Abhishek didn't even come onto the field for a handshake after the match.
Abhishek Sharma was also absent from Team India's practice session on February 10th. Team management cited stomach issues as the reason for his absence. However, media reports suggest he has a stomach infection. Speaking to the media before the practice session, Team India assistant coach Ryan Des Cate stated that Abhishek had a stomach complaint and the team hoped he would be available within the next two days.
Abhishek's absence, combined with Sanju Samson's intense batting practice, is expected to make it difficult for him to play in the match against Namibia. Reports suggest his health has deteriorated over the past 24 hours. Abhishek was also seen with the team at Gautam Gambhir's dinner party in Delhi on February 8th, where Gambhir appeared concerned about his health.
More details about Abhishek Sharma's health are expected to be revealed at the pre-match press conference on February 11. This will provide clarity on when he will be fully fit and able to return to the field.
