Team India's 'Mystery' Spinner Becomes the King of T20, Tops ICC Rankings

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Amidst the Indian team's impressive performance in the 2025 Asia Cup, spinner Varun Chakravarthy has achieved significant good news. In the latest ICC T20 rankings released on Wednesday, Varun Chakravarthy has become the number one ranked spinner. The 34-year-old 'mystery' spinner has created history by achieving this feat.
Varun Chakravarthy is only the third Indian player to reach the top of the T20 International bowling rankings. Before him, only Jasprit Bumrah and Ravi Bishnoi had achieved this feat. Varun reached the top with 733 rating points, surpassing New Zealand's Jacob Duffy (717 points). Among Indian bowlers, Ravi Bishnoi is ranked 8th, and Axar Patel is ranked 12th. This achievement is also special because Varun Chakravarthy is the first player from Tamil Nadu to reach the number 1 position in T20.
Varun Chakravarthy, who made his T20 International debut in 2021, has consistently impressed with his performances. He has taken 35 wickets in 20 matches so far. His economy rate during this period has been just 6.83, which is considered exceptional in the T20 format. He has also taken five wickets in an innings twice.
Varun Chakravarthy is also playing a key role for Team India in the ongoing Asia Cup. Although he has taken only two wickets in two matches, his economical economy rate has been successful in putting pressure on opponents. His bowling could prove to be a trump card for India on the spin-friendly pitches of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Currently, another spinner, Kuldeep Yadav, has created a stir by taking seven wickets in two matches, making India's spin attack look extremely dangerous.
