Will Suryakumar Yadav retire after T20 World Cup win? Captain breaks silence in press conference

Ahmedabad (The Uttam Hindu): Suryakumar Yadav has made history. After MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, he has become the third Indian captain to lead Team India to a T20 World Cup victory. The Indian team won the T20 World Cup on Sunday, defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Following India's title win, Suryakumar Yadav has also clarified his next two goals.
Suryakumar Yadav, who is 35 years old, had been speculated to retire after the World Cup. Speaking to the media after the match, the Indian captain dismissed these speculations and clarified his next two major goals.
Suryakumar Yadav said, "My next goal is to win Olympic gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Also, we have to defend our T20 World Cup title that same year. Don't forget that." Surya's statement makes it clear that he's not going anywhere for at least the next two years.
Suryakumar Yadav was appointed captain of this format after the 2024 T20 World Cup. His goal was to defend the title in front of his home crowd in 2026, and he succeeded. Suryakumar has become the most successful captain among captains from full ICC member countries. He has captained a total of 52 T20 matches, winning 42, losing 8, and ending in no result in 2. Surya's win percentage is 80.77, followed by Rohit Sharma.
Surya, who led Team India to victory with an unbeaten 84 against the USA in the first match of the T20 World Cup 2026, may not have been able to play big innings in subsequent matches, but his short innings helped the team in many matches and laid the foundation for big scores. Suryakumar Yadav scored 242 runs in nine World Cup innings at an average of 30.25. He was the team's third-highest scorer after Samson and Ishan.
