Janmashtami Gift: CM Grants 60-Day Sentence Remission to 14,000 Prisoners

Bhopal (The Uttam Hindu): On the auspicious occasion of Shri Krishna Janmashtami, the Madhya Pradesh government has decided to give a big relief to thousands of prisoners lodged in the state's jails. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has announced that this year on the occasion of Janmashtami, a special remission of 60 days will be given in the sentence of eligible prisoners. This step of the government is expected to benefit about 14,000 prisoners serving sentence in various jails of the state.
According to the information given by the Chief Minister's Office, Dr. Mohan Yadav has issued necessary guidelines to the senior officials of the Jail Department in this regard. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the humanitarian approach and the importance of the festival so that the prisoners can join the process of reform and become a better citizen in the future.
The Chief Minister himself shared the information about this decision on the social media platform 'X'. He wrote in his post, "On the auspicious occasion of Shri Krishna Janmashtami, this year too, instructions have been given to the Jail Department to give a remission of about 60 days in the sentence to the convicted prisoners of the state's jails. About 14 thousand out of 21 thousand prisoners will be benefited by this."
Serious criminals will not get any exemption
The government has clarified that this remission will not apply to all prisoners. Those serving sentences for serious and heinous crimes such as those involved in terrorist activities, sexual crimes (such as rape), and murder will not be given any benefit of this concession. It has been ensured that the benefit of remission will be given only to those prisoners who do not fall in the category of serious crimes and whose conduct in jail has been good.
It is noteworthy that currently about 21,000 prisoners are serving sentence in the jails of Madhya Pradesh. With this decision of the government, two-thirds of the prisoners will get an opportunity to be released soon after completing their sentence and return to the mainstream of society.
