
Bathinda (The Uttam Hindu): A Bathinda court has taken a major step in the murder case of Punjab social media influencer Kanchan Kumari alias Kamal Kaur Bhabhi, declaring Sikh fundamentalist leader Amritpal Singh Mehron a fugitive. The court took this action after the accused failed to appear despite repeated summons. After being declared a fugitive, it has now become easier for the police to issue a Red Corner Notice through Interpol.
Bathinda Cantt police station SHO Daljit Singh Dhillon said that the police have received the court order and have initiated further legal proceedings. According to the police, Amritpal Singh Mehron is the mastermind of this murder and there is strong information that he is currently hiding abroad.
Amritpal Singh Mehron is suspected to be hiding in the UAE, and the extradition process is being expedited
According to police sources, Amritpal Singh Mehron is suspected to be hiding in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Punjab government is coordinating closely with the central government and federal agencies in this matter. All necessary documents and details regarding the accused have been sent to Interpol, and an official response is awaited so that he can be extradited to India and legal action can be taken.
The murder was committed over social media content
Investigation has revealed that on the night of June 9-10, 2025, Amritpal Singh Mehron, Jaspreet Singh and Nirmatjit Singh allegedly strangled Kanchan Kumari to death. The accused claimed that the content posted by Kanchan on social media hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community. After the murder, the accused fled after leaving her body in her car in the parking lot of Adesh Medical College and Hospital in Bhucho Mandi, Bathinda. The body was recovered on the evening of June 11. This high-profile murder created a sensation across the country.
Three accused arrested so far, one absconding
Ranjit Singh, who helped Amritpal Singh Mehron escape in this case, was arrested by the police on February 6, 2026. He is currently on three-day police remand. According to the police, Ranjit helped Mehron reach Amritsar International Airport, from where he fled to the UAE. The other two accused in the murder case, Jaspreet Singh and Nirmatjit Singh, have already been arrested and are in judicial custody.
At present, no orders have been issued by the court to confiscate the movable and immovable properties of Amritpal Singh Mehron, but the police say that further investigation and legal process is going on rapidly.
