New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Cyber fraud methods are constantly changing. Now, fraudsters are using artificial intelligence (AI) to imitate voices, in addition to sending fake links, SMS, emails, or APK files . Cyber criminals may call people pretending to be an acquaintance or relative, claiming a sudden need for money and asking for a transfer.

Voice samples from social media

In voice cloning scams, criminals can exploit video and audio available on social media. Voice samples from Reels, Shorts, or other public videos are then simulated using AI-based tools. The cloned voice can then be used in phone calls or voice messages.

Be cautious when suddenly asked for money

Scammers may call using a familiar voice and claim an emergency. They may fabricate stories like an accident, hospitalization, legal trouble, or an urgent payment requirement, pressuring you to send money quickly.

In such a situation, relying solely on a voice can be risky. The identity of the caller should be independently verified by calling a different number or contacting another family member.

Do not make hasty transactions

According to cybersecurity experts, it's important to double-check bank account information and the reason for the payment before sending money to an unknown account. If the caller repeatedly pressures you to make a quick payment or avoids verifying your identity, caution should be exercised.

Report fraud immediately

If money is transferred inadvertently, it's important to contact your bank and file a cybercrime complaint immediately. In India, reports of financial cyber fraud can be filed immediately by calling the 1930 helpline. Timely reporting can increase the chances of having the transaction stopped or funds frozen.

If any fraud occurs, immediately report it to the Cyber Crime Portal ( https://www.cybercrime.gov.in ) or call 1930. You can also report such suspicious messages through the Sanchar Saathi app or portal.
